As the proud mom of Trimble, Twitch, and now Nico—three incredible pups with cerebellar hypoplasia (CH)—we want to shed light on this condition and share why these amazing dogs deserve love, care, and a chance to thrive.
What Is Cerebellar Hypoplasia?
Cerebellar hypoplasia is a neurological condition where the cerebellum, the part of the brain responsible for coordination, balance, and fine motor skills, doesn’t fully develop. This can happen in dogs (and cats) before birth or during early development, often due to infections, malnutrition, or genetic factors.
While CH affects a dog’s movement and coordination, it’s not progressive or painful, meaning the condition won’t worsen over time, and the pup can live a happy, fulfilling life with the right care.
Symptoms of Cerebellar Hypoplasia
The symptoms of CH vary in severity but are often characterized by:
• Wobbly walking: A classic, endearing “drunken” gait.
• Head bobbing: Tremors that can be more noticeable during focused activities.
• Clumsiness: Difficulty jumping, running, or navigating uneven surfaces.
• Lack of coordination: Struggles with precision movements, like eating or drinking.
These traits don’t hold back CH pups from enjoying life—they simply learn to adapt in their own unique way!
Trimble, Twitch, and now Nico has taught us so much about the resilience and joy of CH pups. Here are some tips for providing the best care:
1. Safe Living Spaces:
• Use rugs or mats to provide traction for walking.
• Block off stairs or other hazards to prevent falls.
• Add padded corners to furniture if needed.
2. Accessible Feeding:
• Use non-slip feeding mats and elevated bowls to make eating and drinking easier.
• Be patient during meals—some pups need extra time to manage their coordination.
3. Physical Support:
• Help your dog with mobility if needed, especially on slippery surfaces.
• Exercise and play regularly to build their strength and confidence.
4. Regular Vet Care:
• While CH itself doesn’t require medical treatment, regular checkups are crucial for overall health.
• Discuss their unique needs with your vet to address any related challenges.
5. Unconditional Love:
• CH dogs may need extra patience, but the love and joy they bring more than make up for it! Celebrate their quirks and milestones—they’ll amaze you with their determination.
• “They’ll never live a normal life.” False! CH pups adapt beautifully and can lead happy, active lives.
• “They’re in pain.” Absolutely not. CH doesn’t cause pain—it’s purely a coordination issue.
• “They’re not adoptable.” CH dogs are just as deserving of a forever home as any other dog. With the right family, they thrive.
Why We Advocate for CH Dogs
Trimble, Twitch, and Nico are daily reminders that every life has value, no matter its challenges. CH dogs may wobble, bob, and stumble, but their spirits are unshakable. They teach us about perseverance, unconditional love, and the beauty of embracing differences.
If you’re considering adopting a CH pup, know that the reward far outweighs the work. These dogs have so much love to give and will enrich your life in ways you never imagine.
